Team Finland in Tanzania

The Team Finland network promotes Finland and its interests abroad: the internationalisation of Finnish enterprises, investments in Finland, and the country brand. The Team Finland operating model brings together the key actors and services in these fields. The core of the network consists of the publicly funded organisations operating in these fields, such as the ministries, Finland’s network of diplomatic missions, Finpro, Tekes, national culture and science institutes, Finnvera, Finnfund, and the regional internationalisation services, built upon the ELY Centres.

The Team Finland network will help your enterprise become more international, grow, and succeed in the global market. For more information on services to companies seeking internationalisation, see: services.team.finland.fi

Objectives of the Team Finland network in Tanzania

Tanzania’s economic and political vision is to become an industrialized middle income country by 2025. The objective seems fairly realistic, given the country’s current economic growth, future gas reserves and the ongoing construction boom. Tanzania is part of the East African Community, which with its 130 million inhabitants is one of the fastest growing regions in the world.

The forthcoming dynamic transition is the most profound in Tanzania’s history: leapfrogging from an under-developed agricultural country to an urbanized society driven by ICT-change. Tanzania with a population of 45 million already has more than 30 million mobile subscriptions and technological change is accelerating at an ever increasing pace. Finland can support this change through its know-how and export of education.

The transition of the Tanzanian society and the future exploitation of gas reserves provide new opportunities for Finnish knowledge-based technology and industrial know-how. Tanzania today resembles the Southeastern Asian economic tigers in the 1980s, and now is the right time to set foot in Tanzania—in few years time it might be too late.

Tanzania along with entire East Africa might turn into a significant new market for Finnish exports. Finland has solutions to offer for Tanzania’s transition in a “consider it solved”-fashion. Finland’s country brand is being developed and renewed towards a more broad based partnership—spearheaded by technology.

Sectors in which broad based cooperation is currently being developed are clean tech, wood-based industry, furniture industry, agricultural reform, industrial services and innovation—which flows in both directions. Energy, mining, port and wood industries offer new opportunities for investment and export.

Finland is well known in Tanzania, but for the private sector, the creation of more robust and future-oriented networks is needed. The challenge is to move from development cooperation based relationship to more equal and broad-based partnerships.
