Finns in Tanzania

First Finnish missionaries arrived in Tanzania in 1948. The co-operation of Finnish and Tanzanian NGO’s has a long history.  Finnish NGO’s implement more projects in Tanzania than in any other of Finland’s development cooperation countries.

At present approximately 200 Finnish citizens live in Tanzania, of which 100 in Dar es Salaam.

The Finnish Education Association - Elimu (Suomalainen Opintoyhdistys Elimu) is supported by the National Education Board of Finland. The association is organising additional teaching of Finnish language to Finnish children in Dar es Salaam. The Finnish community in Tanzania is also organising traditional Finnish celebrations and other activities.

The members of the association can use Elimu’s library, which has about 6,500 volumes in Finnish. In connection with the library there is an exchange point where the tourists can change their holiday reading for other books. Furthermore, the tourists can donate their magazines for other Finns.
